Invited Keynote Speakers

Fabio Casati

Professor, Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento, Italy

Keynote Title: “Crowdsourcing and Automation of Literature Reviews”

Abstract: *Millions* of scientific papers are published every year. While this is a great opportunity for disseminating ideas and results, it also makes it impossible for anybody to keep up even with a small fraction of the knowledge generated each year on any given topic.
In this talk I will discuss problems, ideas and recent progress in understanding how human computation and AI can join forces to provide effective and accurate summaries of scientific knowledge. I will also show how this can potentially enable open access to research experiences, especially in areas where it is hard to find mentors and advisors.

Speaker’s Bio: Fabio Casati is a professor of social informatics at the University of Trento. Until 2006, he was technical lead for the research program on business process intelligence in Hewlett-Packard USA, where he contributed to several HP commercial products in the area of web services and business process management. He then moved to academia, where he started research lines on hybrid human-machine computations and on technologies for happiness and life participation, focusing on achieving direct positive impact on society. He is co-author of a best-selling book on Web services and author of over 250 peer-reviewed papers.

Steven Hoi

Associate Professor, School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University, Singapore

Keynote Title: “Machine Learning and Crowdsourcing for Smart Nation Applications”

Abstract: In this talk, I will first give an overview of opportunities and challenges of our research projects in the context of smart nation applications. I will present an example smart nation application in the domain of smart food consumption and healthy lifestyle, and demonstrate how the state-of-the-art deep learning technique is applied to tackle the practical challenges in our projects. I will then discuss the limitations of traditional machine learning methodologies and introduce some frontier research of machine learning beyond traditional deep learning techniques. Last but not least, I will share some of our ongoing crowdsourcing R&D efforts towards smart nation projects and application.

Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Steven Hoi is currently Associate Professor in the School of Information Systems (SIS), Singapore Management University (SMU). Prior to joining SMU, he was a tenured Associate Professor at the School of Computer Engineering of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He received his Bachelor degree from Tsinghua University, and his Master and Ph.D degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include large-scale machine learning (online learning and deep learning) with application to big data analytics across various real-world applications, including multimedia retrieval, computer vision and pattern recognition, social media analytics, web search and information retrieval, computational finance, cybersecurity, mobile and software mining, etc. He has published over 200 papers in top conferences and premier journals, and served as an organizer, area chair, senior PC, TPC member, editor and referee for many top conferences and premier journals. He was the recipients of the Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship and the Lee Kong Chian Fellowship awards for Research Excellence. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Neurocomputing journal.
